Birthday special: Presenting lesser known facts about b’day boy Aamir Khan


Aamir Khan’s full name is Mohammed Aamir Hussain Khan.


Aamir attended three schools as a kid – JB Petit School for his pre-primary education, St. Anne’s High School in Bandra till the eighth grade, and Bombay Scottish School in Mahim for his ninth and tenth grade. 


He was a sport champ as a kid and even represented his school in lawn tennis at various state level championships. He’s also a huge Roger Federer fan.


Aamir’s great grand uncle is the great Indian scholar and leader, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. The actor is related to him from his grandmother’s side. He even named his son Azad, after him.


Aamir was friends with filmmaker Basu Bhattacharya’s son Aditya Bhattacharya. The two friends had even made a silent film titled Paranoia, at the age of 16. Funded by Dr Sriram Lagoo, Aamir acted as well as was the assistant director in the experimental movie.

Aamir played the lead role along with Neena Gupta. Victor Bannerjee and Deepa Lagoo (Dr. Sriram Lagoo’s wife) played Aamir’s parents in Paranoia.


Even though he came from a film family, his parents weren’t too keen in letting Aamir join the movies. But he quit studies to assist his uncle Nasir Hussain in movies like Manzil Manzil and Zabardast.


Aamir joined a theatre group named Avantar where he worked backstage for two years. It enriched him as an actor.


His first feature film Holi (1984) is the only film where Aamir has been credited as Aamir Hussain Khan.


Aamir met his first wife Reena Dutta even before Holi. They were next-door neighbours and Aamir proposed to her the day he turned 21.The two eloped and got married in 1986 and Aamir became a big star only in 1988 after the release of Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (QSQT).


Reena even made a cameo appearance in QSQT’s opening song Papa Kehte Hai.


Aamir and Raj Zutshi doubled up as the publicity workers for QSQT. They excitedly put up posters of the movie on auto rickshaws and buses.


Apparently, after separating from Reena, he kept himself in a dark room for 18 months. It was good friend Salman Khan who helped him then.


Aamir was approached by Madame Tussauds wax museum to build his wax statue but he declined because he felt that his craft was more of value to his fans than a statue.


The only time Aamir has appeared in a music video was in 2003 in Roopkumar Rathod’s song Jab bhi choom leta hoon.


Aamir Khan wanted to concentrate on shooting for his movie so he denied Farah Khan’s request to be a part of the Om Shaanti Om song where almost the entire Hindi film industry was featured.


He was offered Hum Aapke Hain Koun…!, as also Darr and Swades, all milestone movies.


The actor abhors taking showers and avoids it during holidays. In fact, he loved his role of a Mumbai tapori in Ghulam (1998) because he did not have to bath for days.


Whereas Aamir’s favourite Hollywood heroes are Leonardo Di Caprio and Daniel Day-Lewis, in Bollywood its Govinda.


When Aamir sits for a script narration, he requests the director to narrate him the story without letting him know the character they’d like him to play. Once the story gets over, he tells which role he wants to play in the film.


In Farhan Akhtar’s directorial debut Dil Chahta Hai, Aamir was offered to play the role of the loner Sid, who’s in love with an older woman (later portrayed by Akshaye Khanna). But Aamir found the character of Akash more interesting.


Aamir was the first actor to start a blog. He used to go out of his way to interact with his fans there.


Aamir, who never had a drinking habit, consumed one litre of vodka to shoot the song Tere ishq mein naachenge in Raja Hindustani to portray a drunken character. Method acting at its best.


Aamir is a big foodie and his favourite cuisine is Mughlai. In fact, according to his wife Kiran, he has an eating disorder and eats almost everything around if not on a diet.


Ashutosh Gowariker’s iconic movie Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India (2001) was rejected by Aamir six times. But he loved the seventh draft so much that he decided to go ahead and produced the movie as well.


Aamir is a big fan of the Calvin and Hobbes comic strip series and has a huge stock in his home. He loves to gift it to people and gifted one book to Amitabh Bachchan. Apart from Calvin and Hobbes, he has a well-stocked book shelf in his study and is a complete bookworm.


It was Aamir who had suggested Vishal Bhardwaj to adapt Shakespeare’s Othello into a movie. The role of Langda Tyagi was offered to Saif Ali Khan instead, due to creative differences in the past between the filmmaker and Aamir.


Aamir’s ‘favourite place on Earth’ is Panchgani. He has a bungalow there and spends his wedding anniversary every year in Panchgani.


Aamir dislikes loud music, which may be the reason why he’s absent from most of the Bollywood parties.


The bowler hat that you see Aamir sporting in Dhoom 3, was worn by Aamir for three months before the movie shoot began, so that he can get accustomed to it.


Aamir can solve the Rubik’s cube in around 100 seconds. As a kid, he could do it in 28 seconds!


Contrary to popular belief that Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan have never worked in a movie together, the duo had come together in a scene in Ashutosh Gowariker’s directorial debut, Pehla Nasha. Deepak Tijori was the lead actor in it!


Aamir Khan was the videographer of Akshay Kumar and Twinkle Khanna’s hush-hush wedding!


Aamir’s teenage nephew Pablo, his cousin Mansoor Khan’s son, was an assistant director in Nitesh Tiwari’s blockbuster Dangal.


Aamir trained for almost two years to get his Bhojpuri accent bang on in Rajkumar Hirani’s PK.


Among Aamir’s several fans worldwide, one is the international Chinese superstar Jackie Chan.


Aamir is vocal about various social causes without making a big hoopla in the media about it. He has started water conservation efforts and has vowed to make Maharashtra drought free, one village at a time.


Aamir’s mother gifts him the same thing on every birthday. She makes her signature seekh kebabs that Aamir absolutely loves.
